The Northeastern Huskies and the Providence Friars meet Saturday in college basketball action from Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Northeastern is 0-1 following an opener loss to Boston U back on Monday. As for Providence, they beat Rider by one point in their first game this year. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.

Northeastern had a dismal year in 2021-22. The Huskies went just 9-22 overall with a 2-16 run in Colonial Athletic Association games. That would leave Northeastern in the basement of the conference standings, behind William & Mary by two games.

In their first action of the 2022-23 season, the Huskies faced Boston U. Northeastern was down by five at halftime and eventually lost 72-63. Jahmyl Telfort was the top scorer on the team with 26 points and nine boards.

Over on the Providence side, they had a nice regular season and eventually went 27-6 overall with a 14-3 run in the Big East. The Friars finished atop the standings with that effort and lost to Creighton in the conference tourney. Providence made it to the Sweet Sixteen in the national tournament.

Facing off against Rider in their opener this week, Providence was in trouble with a 10-point halftime deficit. The Friars fought back in the second for a 66-65 comeback win. Bryce Hopkins led the way on 18 points, and Ed Croswell doubled with 13 points and 10 boards.

PICK: I’m leaning toward Providence but I’m probably not going to touch it. The Friars had a dismal first half against Rider and nearly gave away the game. That said, Providence gets credit for rallying and taking the win. Overall the Friars shot 36 percent from the field and 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from 3-point range. Providence didn’t have a huge rebound advantage (39-36) and the team was outpaced in assists 14-10. This matchup is going to require a better effort, but I think the Friars can get there.
