The Montana State Bobcats and the Quinnipiac Bobcats meet Saturday in college basketball action from Place Bell. Montana State is coming off a Friday game versus UNC Greensboro. In that one Montana State lost by 11 points. As for Quinnipiac, they’re coming off a matchup versus Stephen F. Austin. Quinnipiac ended up winning by 14 points. Montana State began their year on a 3-2 clip over five games. The Bobcats lost to Grand Canyon in the opener, then beat Long Beach State and lost to Oregon. Montana State won their next pair versus Warner Pacific and North Dakota.
In Friday’s game versus UNC Greensboro, Montana State kept the pace in the first half, but was outscored 38-28 after the break in a 77-66 defeat. Jubrile Belo led the team on 18 points, and RaeQuan Battle added 14 points of his own.
Over on the Quinnipiac side, they got off to a nice start this year with a 5-0 run. The Bobcats took out Rhode Island and Stonehill in their first pair, then beat Central CT State, Dartmouth and Albertus in the following trio.
Matched up against Stephen F. Austin on Friday, Quinnipiac posted a four-point advantage in the first half. The Bobcats hit a 28-18 run in the second half and managed a 58-44 win. Tops in scoring was Paul Otieno with 13 points and 15 boards.
PICK: I’m probably sticking with Quinnipiac here. The Bobcats put up an unglamorous but still impressive win over Stephen F. Austin on Friday. Quinnipiac hit 44.4 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Lumberjacks 43-25 in the win. There are still some things to clean up however, like the 26 turnovers and sketchy 5-of-17 shooting from outside.
As for Montana State, they did pretty well in the first half of their Friday game versus UNCG but eventually couldn’t stay with the Spartans. If Quinnipiac posts a solid defensive outing in this one, Montana State may find it hard to keep the cover pace.
