Winthrop vs Eastern Michigan 11/23/22 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Eastern Michigan Eagles and the Winthrop Eagles meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. Eastern Michigan enters this one at 1-4 overall. The Eagles are coming off a loss to Fort Wayne. As for Winthrop, they’re 2-4 following a blowout loss to Southern Miss on Tuesday. Eastern Michigan began their season with a 75-66 win over Wayne St. (Mich.) in the opener. The Eagles hit the skids after that however, falling to Michigan 88-83, Bradley 89-61 and Oakland 92-90 over their next three games. 

In Tuesday’s matchup against Fort Wayne, the Eagles had another rough outing. Eastern Michigan trailed 33-30 going into the break and didn’t get any closer in a 74-67 loss. Emoni Bates led the team on 16 points with four rebounds. 

Over on the Winthrop side, they lost to Penn State in their opener 93-68 but bounced back with wins over Piedmont and Middle Tennessee in the next pair. Winthrop then lost to Auburn and Mercer in consecutive outings. 

In the Tuesday game versus Southern Miss, Winthrop held a 34-30 lead at halftime. The Eagles were outscored 47-18 in the second half and ended up falling 77-52. Sin’Cere McMahon was the top team scorer on 16 points with one rebound and one assist. 

PICK: I might take a stab on Eastern Michigan here. Sure, the Eagles have had a rough run this season with four straight losses. That said, Eastern Michigan has been competitive in most of their defeats, losing three of four by seven points or fewer. The good news is that the Eagles shot a nice 52.8 percent from the field with a 34-31 rebounding advantage in their loss to Fort Wayne. It’s hard to trust a 1-4 team for anything, but I think Eastern Michigan has a decent shot in this one.
