Marist Red Foxes
The Red Foxes hit a rough 8-14 run over their first 22 games this year. Marist finished off the regular season on a 2-5 run, taking losses to Saint Peter’s, Siena, Fairfield, Iona and Quinnipiac alongside wins over Niagara and Manhattan.
In the tournament rematch versus Manhattan on Tuesday, the Red Foxes jumped out to a 36-17 halftime lead. Marist was outscored 33-25 from there but still won 61-50. Leading the way was Patrick Gardner with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Over on the Quinnipiac side, they hit a 17-7 record in their first 24 games this year. The Bobcats closed out the regular season on a sketchy 3-4 run, beating Siena, Rider and Marist with losses otherwise versus Niagara, Canisius, Manhattan and Fairfield.
In the Marist matchup back on Saturday, Quinnipiac hit a 50-34 halftime lead. The Bobcats had a 42-38 second-half deficit but still won 88-76. Tops in scoring were Dezi Jones and Matt Balanc, each with 21 points and a combined nine rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stay with Quinnipiac here. The Bobcats have been pretty sketchy recently but they’ve still been scoring well with 70 or more points in four straight games. Quinnipiac won both meetups between these teams this year: 72-66 on New Year’s Eve at home and 88-76 in the Saturday game at McCann Arena. The Red Foxes have scored 76 or more points in three of their last four and are coming off a nice win over a decent Manhattan team. That said, I don’t think they’ll hang around too long with Quinnipiac if the Bobcats play well.
