Loyola hit an 8-14 stretch over their first 22 outings this year. The Ramblers closed out the year on a 2-6 run, falling to Saint Joseph’s, Richmond, Dayton, Fordham, Saint Louis and Rhode Island with wins otherwise versus UMass and La Salle.
Back on Saturday versus La Salle, the Ramblers went into the break with a 38-29 edge. Loyola hit another 38 points from there and won it 76-73. Tops in scoring was Sheldon Edwards on 25 points and Philip Alston added 19 points with five rebounds.
Saint Joseph’s Hawks
Over on the Saint Joseph’s side, they were 11-11 over their first 22 games of the season. The Hawks are 3-5 in their last eight with losses to La Salle, Duquesne, VCU, Davidson and St. Bonaventure. The wins otherwise came over George Washington, Loyola and Richmond.

I’ll probably stay with Saint Joseph’s. You could make a case either way here, though. The Hawks haven’t played since Wednesday versus Richmond, but that was a pretty strong effort for a victory and halted a four-game losing streak. These teams have met twice before this season with the Hawks taking wins both times. One was an 86-55 result at Hagan Arena on January 14; the other was an 83-71 win on February 8 at Gentile Arena. Loyola is coming off a good effort versus La Salle, halting their own four-game losing streak. I like this one to be pretty competitive most of the way, with the Hawks powering out the eventual cover.
