Tennessee got off to a nice 14-2 run over their first 16 games, losing to only Colorado and Arizona in that stretch. The Volunteers are 5-2 since then with wins over Mississippi State, LSU, Georgia, Texas and Auburn.
In the Auburn game on Saturday, Tennessee held a 23-19 lead by the break. The Volunteers were outscored 24-23 from there but still held on for the 46-43 win. Josiah-Jordan James was the only double-digit team scorer with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Vanderbilt Commodores
Over on the Vanderbilt side, they stood at an even 8-8 over their first 16 games this year. The Commodores are 3-4 in their last seven games, losing to Alabama, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Alabama again with wins otherwise versus Arkansas, Georgia and Ole Miss.
Matched up against Ole Miss on Saturday, the Commodores held a three-point lead in the locker room. Vanderbilt kept the pace on a 40-40 run from there and won 74-71. Liam Robbins (19 points; 12 rebounds) and Tyrin Lawrence (18 points; 10 rebounds) each doubled up.

I’ll probably stick with Tennessee. The Volunteers are coming off something of an uninspiring—yet defensively sound—win over a very good Auburn team, shooting a dismal 27 percent with just 2-of-21 (9.5 percent) from 3-point range and 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from the line. The good news is that Tennessee had 47 rebounds (15 offensive) and just nine turnovers in that one. The last time these teams met up was back on January 10 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Tennessee took a 77-68 win in that one. If the Volunteers can rebound from the cold shooting performance in the Auburn game (which they should) I think they’ll be in good shape for a cover.
