The Evansville Purple Aces and the Akron Zips meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Germain Arena. Evansville has lost their last three straight games, most recently on Tuesday against Vermont. As for the Zips, they’ve lost their last pair. Akron fell to Appalachian State in their Tuesday game. Evansville posted a 2-2 run over their first four games, falling to Cincinnati and Belmont while otherwise beating IUPUI and DePauw. The Aces lost their next pair of games afterward, falling to UCF 75-59 and Rice 109-104 in OT.
In Tuesday’s matchup against Vermont, the Aces dropped another one. This time Evansville limped to 23 first-half points in a 58-49 defeat. Jawaun Newton was the only Aces player in double-figures with 16 points and three boards.
Over on the Akron side, they started out the season with a tough loss 67-66 to Ohio State. The Zips bounced back with wins over Point Park and Wheeling Jesuit in their next two games, then lost to Fordham 63-43 in game four.
In their Tuesday matchup against Appalachian State, the Zips managed just 21 points in the first half and 24 in the second in a 57-45 defeat. Akron’s leading scorer was Enrique Freeman with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
PICK: I’m going to try Akron in this one, but staying away. Both teams need a good bounce-back game after their Tuesday outings, though. The Zips shot a cold 30.5 percent from the field against App State, but the good news is they outpaced the Mountaineers with a 38-33 rebounding edge and 11-4 in assists. The 14 turnovers didn’t help, though.
As for Evansville, they’ve had trouble scoring this year and kept that trend going Tuesday with a 32.7 percent mark from the field. This should be a better matchup for both squads, but I still think Akron has the inside track on a potential cover.
