Texas Southern Tigers
Texas Southern managed to go just 4-10 over their first 14 games with wins over Arizona State, North American, Hampton and HTU. The Tigers would then lose to Grambling State, AR-Pine Bluff, MS Valley State and Alcorn State before wins over Jackson State and Alabama A&M.
In the Alabama A&M game on Saturday, Texas Southern was up 32-21 going into the second half. The Tigers kept the pace on a 38-38 run from there and won 70-59. Davon Barnes led the team on 17 points and four rebounds.
Alabama State Hornets
Over on the Alabama State side, they started the year at 3-11 with wins over Eastern Illinois, Lane and MS Valley State. The Hornets have gone 3-2 over the last five with wins over AR-Pine Bluff, Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M.
Matched up against Prairie View on Saturday, the Hornets scored 28 points in the first half, 22 in the second and six in overtime to eke out a 56-55 win. Both Jordan O’Neal (11 points; 13 rebounds) and Duane Posey (10 points; 10 rebounds) doubled up.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stick with the Hornets in this one. Alabama State is coming off a solid (if low-scoring) win over Prairie View on Saturday, and they’ve managed to win five of the last seven games. The Hornets have hit 69 or more points in five of those seven. As for Texas Southern, they’ve hit 66 or more points in eight straight games so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a high total here. Ultimately I like Alabama State to bag the cover but it should be a competitive matchup—even if both teams are struggling this year.
