Albany vs UMass-Lowell 1/8/23 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The UMass Lowell River Hawks and the Albany Great Danes meet Sunday in college basketball action from McDonough Sports Complex. UMass Lowell is currently 14-2 on the season. The River Hawks beat Maine in their last matchup. As for Albany, they’re 5-12 overall following a loss to UMBC on Thursday. UMass Lowell went 11-1 over their first dozen games, losing to only Rutgers on November 12. After another loss to Rhode Island, the River Hawks have since beaten Boston U, NJIT and Maine over their last trio. 

On Thursday versus Maine, the River Hawks posted a 38-29 first-half advantage. After halftime UMass Lowell was outscored 41-34 but they held on for a 72-70 win. Everette Hammond led the way on 20 points with seven boards. 

Over on the Albany side, they beat only Immaculate, Union NY and Presbyterian over their first 10 games. The Danes are 2-5 in their last seven with losses to Providence, Loyola IL, Virginia, New Hampshire and UMBC. 

Matched up against the Retrievers on Thursday, the Danes took a 40-32 deficit into the second half. Albany scored 51 points from there but still lost 92-83. Gerald Drumgoole was tops in scoring with 26 points and seven rebounds. 

PICK: I’m going to stay with UMass Lowell. Probably not touching this one, though. The River Hawks have been playing with fire over their last two games, with a combined margin of victory of just five points in that pair. Still, UMass Lowell has been scoring well this year with 67 or more points in 13 straight games. Albany has given up 66 or more points in five straight outings so there should be plenty of room for UMass Lowell on the scoreboard here.
