Texas Southern Tigers
Texas Southern had a rough start to the season, going just 6-14 over their first 20 outings. The Tigers got better on a 5-3 run over their next eight, beating Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman, Southern U, MS Valley State and AR-Pine Bluff along the way.
Matched up against Jackson State on Saturday, the Tigers took a 37-29 deficit into the second half. Texas Southern fought back on a 40-34 run from there but still lost 71-69. Joirdon Karl Nicholas led the team on 16 points with 14 rebounds.
Alcorn State Braves
Over on the Alcorn State side, they hit a sketchy 9-10 run to start out the year. Over the next seven the Braves went a nice 6-1 though, beating Grambling State, AR-Pine Bluff, MS Valley State, Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M and Jackson State in that time.
Back on Saturday versus Prairie View A&M, the Braves were within four points at halftime 38-34. Alcorn State couldn’t get any closer in the end, falling 75-71. Tops in scoring was Jeremiah Kendall who doubled on 18 points and 10 rebounds.

I’m going to stick with Alcorn State. You could probably make a case either way, though. The Braves didn’t play very well against a plucky Prairie View team in their last game, and the loss snapped a six-game win streak for the Braves. Alcorn State also won the last time these teams met up back on January 14, a 79-74 affair at H&PE Arena. Texas Southern is on a 3-1 stretch over their last four games, and this one will probably be competitive as well. If the Braves play to their capabilities however, I think they’re a better cover play.
