The Arkansas State Red Wolves and the Appalachian State Mountaineers meet Sunday in Sun Belt Tournament college basketball action from Pensacola Bay Center. Arkansas State Red Wolves
The Red Wolves started out the season on a pretty rough 10-14 run. That stretch included a 3-5 record from mid-January to early February. Arkansas State would then hit a win streak over Ohio, Troy (twice), South Alabama (twice) and Coastal Carolina before a loss to Appalachian State.
In the tournament game Saturday versus Louisiana, Arkansas State didn’t have too many issues. The Red Wolves jumped out to a 48-33 edge by the break, then closed on a 41-29 run for an 89-62 blowout win. Freddy Hicks topped the team with his 23 points and seven boards along the way.

Appalachian State Mountaineers
Over on the Mountaineers’ side, they’ve stayed very consistent all season and only lost consecutive games once. Since their last loss to Texas State, App State has beaten Toledo, Marshall, Louisiana, Old Dominion, Marshall again, Old Dominion again, Arkansas State and Georgia Southern.
Matched up in tournament action versus Georgia Southern on Saturday, the Mountaineers had a close call. Appalachian State scored 41 points in the first half, 35 in the second and nine in overtime for a thrilling 85-80 win. Donovan Gregory led the team with his 22 points, four assists and three rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE ARKANSAS STATE VS APPALACHIAN STATE PREDICTION
I’ll lean toward Appalachian State, but it’s something of a coin flip. The Mountaineers got a real scare from Georgia Southern on Saturday after a middling second half and barely pulled off the victory. App State shot well (51.7 percent) and rebounded well (47) in that one but also coughed up 17 turnovers for 18 Eagles points. Still, it built the win streak to eight games and the Mountaineers have now scored 80 or more points in three straight.
In the last meeting between these teams on March 1, Appalachian State took a dominant home win 80-57. The Mountaineers shot 49.2 percent from the field in that one and had a 48-38 edge in rebounding. The Red Wolves were pretty bad on offense all around with 35.3 percent from the field, 19.2 percent from 3-point range and 28.6 percent from the line. I like Arkansas State to bounce back with a better scoring effort here but I don’t think they’ll quite cover.
