Appalachian State vs Troy 1/14/23 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Troy Trojans and the Appalachian State Mountaineers meet Saturday in college basketball action from Holmes Center. Troy is fresh off a Thursday matchup versus Georgia State. In that one the Trojans won by 12 points. As for App State, they played Georgia Southern in their Thursday game. The Mountaineers went on to lose a close game. Troy went 8-4 over their first 12 games this year. The Trojans lost to St. Thomas MN, Arkansas, SIUE and San Diego State in that time. Troy would then lose to Mercer and Southern Miss before wins over Texas State, ODU and Arkansas State. 

On Thursday versus Georgia State, the Trojans were up three by the break. Troy posted a 35-26 run in the second half and powered out the win 65-53. Leading team scorer Kieffer Punter put up 16 points with four rebounds. 

Over on the Appalachian State side, they were 7-5 after 12 games with losses to Campbell, Kennesaw State, Furman, Charlotte and Wake Forest. The Mountaineers went 2-3 in the next five with wins over Coastal Carolina and James Madison. 

Matched up against Georgia Southern on Thursday, the Mountaineers went into the second half tied at 33-33. Appalachian State was outscored 34-32 in the second half and fell 67-65. Donovan Gregory led the way on 21 points with four assists. 

PICK: I’ll probably stick with Troy here. The Trojans have been a mixed bag scoring wise with 66 or fewer points in four of their last five games. That said, Troy is currently riding a five-game win streak and they’ve held opponents to 64 or fewer points in four of those five games as well. As for App State, they’re coming off a tough loss to Georgia Southern and haven’t been very consistent lately themselves. This is looking like an interesting matchup, but I’m leaning Troy cover/win-wise.
