Washington State Cougars

The Cougars lost to only Mississippi State, Santa Clara, Utah, Colorado, Oregon and California over their first 19 games of the year. A win streak over Utah, Colorado, Washington, Oregon State, Oregon, California and Stanford came over the next seven outings for a 20-6 overall record.

On Thursday versus Arizona, Washington State kept their excellent run going with another victory. The Cougars held a slim one-point lead at halftime, then hit a 43-41 run from there in a 77-74 win. Jaylen Wells was tops in scoring on 27 points with three boards in the victory.

Arizona State Sun Devils

Over on the Arizona State side, they posted a spotty run at 11-7 over their first 18 outings. The Sun Devils lost six of the next eight games versus Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, California, Colorado and Arizona with wins otherwise versus Utah and Oregon State in that time.

Matched up against Washington in their Thursday game, the Sun Devils took a close loss in OT. Arizona State came back from a 45-24 deficit to force the extra period but ended up falling 84-82. Frankie Collins topped the team in the defeat with 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

I’ll stick with Washington State. The Cougars are on a great run right now and coming off another nice victory over Arizona. Washington State shot a tepid 41.9 percent from the field in that one but stayed strong on the boards (38) and got 12 points off 11 Wildcats turnovers. That makes 72 or more points in six of the eight games during this current win streak.

As for Arizona State, they get credit for fighting back against Washington in tier last outing but they ultimately fell short. The Sun Devils have been pretty erratic on the scoreboard lately with fewer than 67 points in three of the last seven games. It’s likely going to take a big total to keep pace with the Cougars, and I don’t think Arizona State has the gas to do it.
