Furman rolled to a win over North Greenville in their first game of the year, scoring 62 first-half points on the way to a 118-66 blowout win. Mike Bothwell and Alex Hunter were the top scorers for the Paladins, each with 22 points and a combined eight assists.
Game two was another win for the Paladins, but this one took overtime to finish. Furman outscored Louisville 13-5 in the extra period for an 80-72 victory. Bothwell was the lone top scorer in that one with 30 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Over on the Belmont side, they were within five points of Ohio at halftime in their opener this year but couldn’t get any closer in an eventual 92-80 loss. The Bruins’ top scorer was Ben Sheppard with 25 points, three assists and two rebounds.
In game two things went better for the Bruins. At halftime against Evansville Belmont rode a 34-14 advantage to an 81-43 win. Grayson Murphy topped the team on 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Sheppard added 11 points and three boards as well.
Belmont is 5-0-1 ATS in their last six Monday games and 1-6 ATS in their last seven as a favorite. The Bruins are 1-6 ATS in their last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Paladins are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 Monday games and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games. Furman is 0-8 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m probably going to stick with Furman, but staying away. The Paladins didn’t shoot particularly well against Louisville in their last outing, with 39.3 percent from the floor. The good news is that Furman powered out the win thanks to 43 rebounds and a solid 12-of-28 from 3-point range.
As for Belmont, they’re coming off a nice win versus Evansville. The Bruins had four different players in double-figures there and got nice contributions up and down the roster. Still, if Furman is playing well I don’t think Belmont will be able to keep up.
