Arkansas State Red Wolves
The Red Wolves took a step back in the 2022-23 campaign, going 13-20 overall with a 4-14 showing in Sun Belt games. Arkansas State finished ahead of only Georgia State with that record. In the conference tournament, the Red Wolves beat Coastal Carolina in the opener matchup before a 63-59 loss to Troy.
The Red Wolves had a tough road matchup in their opener versus Wisconsin back on Monday. After getting outscored 56-41 in the first half, Arkansas State limped to a 105-76 loss. Freddy Hicks managed 21 points with seven rebounds to lead the way. Caleb Fields had 17 points with a pair of rebounds as well.
Bowling Green Falcons
Over on the Bowling Green side, they’re coming off a pretty rough showing last season as well. The Falcons ended up 11-20 overall, landing in the bottom half of the standings with a 5-13 showing in MAC matchups. Bowling Green failed to qualify for the conference tournament after losing 10 of their final 11 games.
The good news for Bowling Green is that they kicked off the Todd Simon era with a convincing victory over Chicago State. The Falcons posted 32 points in the first half and 38 more in the second on the way to a 70-41 win. Marcus Hill led the charge with his 18 points and five rebounds. Rashaun Agee posted 14 points with eight boards.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m going to try Arkansas State in this one. We should have a pretty interesting matchup on our hands regardless, though. The Red Wolves didn’t really get a chance to stretch their legs in the opener versus Wisconsin, but still shot 40.7 percent from the field with 28 rebounds. Arkansas State couldn’t do much defensively against a superior Badgers squad, allowing 65.0 percent shooting from the field. Bowling Green should be a much more manageable matchup, but a competitive one. The Falcons shot 44.1 percent from the field in their opener, holding Chicago State to just 25.0 percent shooting. I like this one to be a fairly high-scoring total, with Arkansas State banging out a road cover/win. Should be a fun one to watch.
