The Providence Friars and the Butler Bulldogs meet Sunday in college basketball action from Hinkle Fieldhouse. Providence is 21-3 on the year so far. The Friars lost to Villanova in their last outing. As for Butler, they’re sitting at 13-14 this season and lost to St. John’s in their most recent appearance. Providence has stayed consistent all year so far; they’re yet to lose consecutive games. The Friars’ only losses this season have come November 23 to Virginia, January 4 to Marquette and this past Tuesday to Villanova.
In the Villanova matchup, Providence was down 39-46 heading into the second half. The Friars posted a 45-43 edge from there but it wasn’t enough in an 89-84 loss. Nate Watson was the top team scorer on 20 points and six rebounds.
Over on the Butler side, they started out the year at a solid 7-3 overall but they’ve been pretty choppy since then. The Bulldogs are 2-4 in their last six games with losses to Xavier, St. John’s, Creighton and St. John’s again in that time.
Back on Friday in the St. John’s rematch, Butler posted a 30-46 deficit in the first half and a 27-45 deficit from there in a 91-57 blowout loss. Jayden Taylor was the only double-digit scorer on 19 points and six rebounds.
The Bulldogs are 2-5 ATS in the last seven at home and 2-5 ATS in the last seven Sunday games. Butler is 4-1 ATS in their last five after a straight-up loss.
Meanwhile, the Friars are 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 Sunday games. Providence is 1-4 ATS in their last five as a favorite.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Butler. The Bulldogs’ last game against St. John’s was an ugly blowout loss, granted, but there are some positives to gather from this 2-4 run. Butler has lost three of those four games by three points or fewer, so they’re staying competitive against tough teams.
Butler lost 69-62 the last time these teams met up back on January 23. Providence is going to come out frustrated and firing after their latest loss, but if the Bulldogs can withstand the onslaught I think they can bag a cover.
