San Francisco managed a 15-2 run in their first 17 games with losses to Grand Canyon and Loyola. It’s been a 2-3 stretch since then with losses to BYU, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s amid wins versus Pepperdine and Santa Clara.
In the Santa Clara game back on Saturday, the Dons posted a 43-42 edge in the first half and finished off on a 45-43 run for an 88-85 win. San Francisco’s top scorer was Jamaree Bouyea with 25 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Over on the BYU side, they went 17-4 in their first 21 games with losses to Utah Valley, Creighton, Vanderbilt and Gonzaga. The Cougars’ last two games have both been losses. They’ve fallen to Santa Clara and Pacific in that pair.
On Saturday in the Pacific game, the Cougars were down 28-33 heading into halftime. BYU posted a 45-43 run in the second but ended up losing 76-73. Alex Barcello put up 19 points with six boards and two assists in the defeat.
The Cougars are 1-5 ATS in their last six Thursday games and 0-4 ATS in their last four overall. BYU is 25-9-1 ATS in their last 35 after an ATS loss.
Meanwhile, the Dons are 8-20-1 ATS in their last 29 overall and 1-7-1 ATS in their last nine road games. San Francisco is 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven Thursday games.
PICK: I’m going to stay with BYU here. I could probably go either way in this one, though; it should be one of the better matchups on the Thursday slate. In any case, BYU has had a couple of rough games in their last pair, losing both by a combined four points. The Cougars were able to take care of San Francisco the last time these teams met up back on January 15, though. The result was a 71-69 win.
This one should be equally competitive, so anything could happen. I like BYU to get back on track and bang out a cover, though. Should be fun.
