The Sacramento State Hornets and the Cal Poly Mustangs meet Monday in college basketball action from Mott Athletic Center. Sacramento State sits at 1-1 on the young season. The Hornets are coming off a loss to Utah. As for Cal Poly, they’re 1-1 and fresh off a close loss to North Dakota State. Sacramento State kicked off their year against William Jessup back on Tuesday. The Hornets jumped out to a nice 48-19 edge at halftime and cruised for the win 89-59. Bryce Fowler put up 17 points with four assists and four rebounds to lead the team.
In game two, the Hornets got into some trouble against Utah. Sac State put up just 30 points in the first half and 26 more in the second during an 89-56 blowout loss. Fowler was the team’s only double-digit scorer with 12 points, five rebounds and one assist.
Over on the Cal Poly side, they opened up their season against Westcliff. The Mustangs didn’t have a whole lot of trouble during the win, ultimately taking it 86-53. Alimamy Koroma topped the team with 17 points and eight rebounds in that one.
The Mustangs matched up with North Dakota State in game two and had a 30-23 deficit heading into the break. Cal Poly got better from there but couldn’t complete the comeback with a 60-57 loss. Rocky Kreuser led the way with 20 points and eight boards.
The Mustangs are 20-49-1 ATS in their last 70 at home and 4-0 ATS in their last four after an ATS win. Cal Poly is 6-0 ATS in their last six overall.
Meanwhile, the Hornets are 6-1 ATS in their last seven as a favorite and the over is 4-0 in their last four road games. the over is 4-0 in Sac State’s last four overall.
PICK: I’m going to try Cal Poly. This should be a pretty competitive matchup however, and it’ll show us where each team stands in the early going. The Mustangs need a bounce-back after shooting just 37.7 percent from the floor in their last game and getting out-muscled on the boards 38-30.
As for Sac State, they lost the rebound battle 58-29 and shot just 31.3 percent versus Utah. I like both teams returning to play fairly well in this one, though; it should be a fun game to watch.
