The UC Irvine Anteaters and the Cal Poly Mustangs meet Thursday in college basketball action from Mott Athletic Center. UC Irvine sits at 14-8 so far this year. The Anteaters beat Long Beach State in their most recent game. As for Cal Poly, they’re currently 5-20 and coming off a loss to Hawaii. UC Irvine had a spotty 1-6 run in December and January, but otherwise they’ve stayed pretty consistent this season overall. The Anteaters are 8-1 in their last nine games. After their latest loss to CSU Fullerton, UC Irvine took out Long Beach State over the weekend.
On Saturday versus the Beach, the Anteaters jumped out to a commanding 46-23 lead by the break. UC Irvine had to hold on but eventually prevailed 77-72. Leading scorer Dawson Baker finished on 18 points and four rebounds.
Over on the Cal Poly side, it’s been a rough ride all year; the team hasn’t been able to win consecutive outings yet. The Mustangs are currently riding an eight-game losing streak, falling to UC Riverside, CSU Bakersfield and Hawaii in the last trio of games.
On Thursday in the Hawaii matchup, the Mustangs posted 27 points in the first half and 27 more in the second on the way to a 63-54 defeat. Camren Pierce was the top Cal Poly scorer on 15 points, five rebounds and two assists.
The Mustangs are 23-53-1 ATS in their last 77 at home and 1-5 ATS in their last six after an ATS win. Cal Poly is 5-2 ATS in their last seven Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Anteaters are 0-5-1 ATS in their last six road games and 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 overall. UC Irvine is 1-6 ATS in their last seven Thursday games.
PICK: I’m probably going to stay with UC Irvine. The Anteaters have posted some nice performances in this 8-1 streak, despite some fairly low points totals. UC Irvine has been at 66 points or below in five of those nine outings.
The last time these teams met up back on January 29, UC Irvine posted a 72-48 blowout victory at home. Things probably won’t be quite so easy in this rematch, but I still feel better about the Anteaters on a cover.
