Florida started out the year with a matchup versus Elon. The Gators started hot with 47 first-half points and cruised to a 74-61 win. Game two was another big victory (and a slower start), ending up 71-55 over Florida State.
The Gators didn’t have much trouble with Milwaukee in their last game. Florida bagged a 33-22 halftime edge and scored 48 more points from there in an 81-45 win. Colin Castleton led the team on 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Over on the California side, they got off to a very slow start this year. The Bears lost their first two games 80-67 to UC San Diego and 55-52 to UNLV. Cal was able to finally get a win 75-70 over San Diego.
In Thursday’s matchup versus Southern Utah, California got their record back to .500 with a 75-68 win. The Bears needed a second-half surge and two overtimes to do it, though. Andre Kelly finished with 29 points and 15 rebounds to lead the team.
Florida is 2-5 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games and 1-4 ATS in their last five as a favorite. The under is 10-3-1 in the Gators’ last 14 overall.
Meanwhile, the Bears are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 Monday games and 5-1 ATS in their last six overall. The over is 5-2 in Cal’s last seven overall.
PICK: I’m going to try Florida. The Gators were rolling along well in the Milwaukee game, posting 47.1 percent from the field, 46 rebounds and 21 assists. It’s taken Florida a few games to get going, but they’re playing well right now.
As for California, they’ve struggled quite a bit so far despite the .500 start. The Bears could barely handle the one-win Southern Utah squad, so I don’t see them keeping up here.
