Iona Gaels
Iona started out the year on a decent clip, going 11-5 over their first 16 outings. The Gaels are 5-2 since then, losing to Rider and Siena with wins over Fairfield, Manhattan, Quinnipiac, Mount St. Mary’s and Fairfield again otherwise.
In the Fairfield rematch on Sunday, the Gaels went into halftime with a 28-20 edge. Iona hit a 42-41 advantage in the second half and ended up with a 70-61 win. Nelly Junior Joseph doubled up in that one with 18 points and 16 rebounds.
Canisius Golden Griffins
Over on the Canisius side, they opened up the year on a sketchy run, going just 4-11 over their first 15 outings. The Griffins are 1-6 since then with losses to Marist, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, Manhattan, Niagara and Marist again.
On Sunday versus Marist, the Griffins managed a 33-26 deficit in the locker room. In the second half Canisius was outpaced 42-41 and lost 75-67. Leading scorer Jordan Henderson put up 17 points and four rebounds.

I’ll probably stay with Iona in this one. The Gaels have won four of their last five games and they’re scoring pretty well these days. Iona has hit 67 or more points in six of their last seven outings. As for Canisius, they’re on a five-game losing streak right now but they’re scoring pretty well themselves with 67 or more points in four straight. The Griffins are giving up a lot of points on the other side however, so Iona should have plenty of room to stretch their legs on offense in this one.
