Niagara managed to go 8-8 to start the year, then lost three straight games in late January. The Eagles would fight back with a win streak over Monmouth, Manhattan and Iona before tallying losses to Fairfield and Marist in their last pair.
On Monday versus Marist, the Eagles were down 21-33 at halftime. Niagara posted a 49-44 lead in the second half but it wasn’t enough in a 77-70 loss. Leading scorer Marcus Hammond finished on 21 points and six boards.
Over on the Griffins’ side, they posted a 5-9 run through their first 14 games of the year. Canisius has only been able to win three games since then, however. The last two outings have both been losses to Marist and Fairfield.
Matched up against Fairfield on Monday, the Griffins were outscored 33-40 in the first half. Canisius managed to force overtime but ended up losing 80-76 in a tough one. Malek Green led the team on 19 bench points with three rebounds.
The Griffins are 6-1 ATS in the last seven home games and 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. The over is 3-1-1 in Canisius’ last five overall.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games and 12-5 ATS in their last 17 Saturday games. The over is 4-0-1 in Niagara’s last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Niagara in this one. Both these teams could use a good showing here, though; it’s been a rough couple of games. In any case, the Eagles have been playing things tight lately; two of their last three wins have come in overtime and they’re hit-and-miss when it comes to putting up points.
Still, Niagara won this matchup 68-58 the last time these teams met up back on January 13. This one’s probably going to be another gritty game and a tight matchup the whole way. I trust Niagara a little bit better cover/win-wise right now, but it’s close.
