Charleston vs Elon 1/14/23 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Elon Phoenix and the College of Charleston Cougars meet Saturday in college basketball action from TD Arena. Elon is currently 2-15 on the season and coming off a loss to NC A&T. Elon went 2-8 over their first 10 games with wins over Erskine and JWU-Charlotte. The Phoenix have lost to Presbyterian, Valparaiso, Indiana, Drexel, Delaware, UNC Wilmington and NC A&T in succession since then. 

In the NC A&T game on Wednesday, the Phoenix took a 46-39 edge into the break. Elon was outscored 41-25 from there and lost it 80-71. Torrence Watson was the high scorer on the team with 15 points and nine rebounds. 

Over on the Charleston side, they lost to North Carolina in their second game. The Cougars have since beaten Richmond, Davidson, Colorado State, Virginia Tech, Kent State, ODU, the Citadel, Presbyterian, North Greenville, Stetson, Coastal, Hampton, Towson, NC A&T, Delaware and UNCW. 

On Wednesday matched up against UNC Wilmington, the Cougars were up 42-31 at the half. Charleston had to scramble in the second half but eventually powered out the 71-69 win. Dalton Bolon was tops on 16 points with five rebounds. 

PICK: I’ll probably stick with Charleston here. Also probably staying away. The Cougars have a couple of close escapes lately: two of their last four wins have come by just two points each. That said, Charleston is doing great offensively; they’ve hit 71 or more points in six straight games. As for Elon, there’s not much to be positive about this year. The Phoenix haven’t been close in too many games. Ultimately I like Charleston to post a huge win here, but there’s always a chance of a Phoenix cover in garbage time.
