The College of Charleston Cougars and the Chattanooga Mocs meet Saturday in college basketball action from McKenzie Arena. Charleston enters this one at 3-2 so far. The Cougars lost to Oklahoma State in their last outing. As for Chattanooga, they’re 5-0 this year and fresh off a win over Covenant. Charleston started off the year with a nice 3-0 run. The Cougars took out South Carolina State, Lipscomb and Loyola MD during that stretch. Game four was Charleston’s first loss, 94-83 to North Carolina.
On Monday against Oklahoma State, the Cougars fell behind 43-36 at the break and couldn’t finish closer in a 96-66 blowout loss. Tops in scoring was John Meeks with 22 points and four boards. Reyne Smith added 15 points with five more rebounds.
Over on the Chattanooga side, it’s been a nice run so far—with a couple of close calls. The Mocs beat LMU in their opener, then kept winning over UNC Asheville, Tennessee Tech and VCU in their next trio.
On Tuesday against Covenant, Chattanooga didn’t have any issues. The Mocs jumped out to a 48-16 halftime lead and cruised from there in a 100-39 win. Grant Ledford led the team with 18 points and six boards.
Chattanooga is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 overall and 5-1 ATS in their last six after a straight-up win. The under is 5-0 in the Mocs’ last five overall.
Meanwhile, Charleston is 1-7 ATS in their last eight road games and 1-6 ATS in their last seven Saturday games. The over is 5-1 in the Cougars’ last six overall.
PICK: I’m probably going to stick with Chattanooga. The Mocs have had two relatively close games so far this year, winning by seven over Tennessee Tech and two versus VCU. This one has the makings of another competitive outing, as Charleston has scored 79 or more points in four of their five games so far. The Mocs are going to have to keep the defense tight, but I think Chattanooga can eke out a cover if they play well.
