East Tennessee State went 5-3 over their first eight games this year, losing to App State, Tennessee and UAB along the way. After a 2-2 run in their next four games, the Buccaneers took out Georgia in their last matchup.
In the Georgia game on December 22, the Buccaneers scored 48 points in the first half and 38 more from there in a tight 86-84 win. Leading scorer David Sloan put up 24 points, and Jordan King added 22 points with three rebounds.
Over on the Chattanooga side, they got on a nice 5-0 run to start the year before a loss to Charleston. The Mocs won four more games from there, then fell to Belmont and Murray State before another victory versus Middle Tennessee.
In the Middle Tennessee matchup, the Mocs were down by three points at halftime. After a 46-31 run, Chattanooga ended with a 77-65 win. David Jean-Baptiste put up 24 points, and Malachi Smith doubled on 21 points and 13 boards.
Chattanooga is 1-4 ATS in their last five Thursday games and the over is 6-0 in their last six overall. The under is 4-1 in the Mocs’ last five at home.
Meanwhile, the Bucs are 2-6 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win and the over is 6-2 in their last eight on the road. The under is 12-5 in Chattanooga’s last 17 after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m sticking with Chattanooga. The Mocs are coming off a solid game versus Middle Tennessee, shooting 47.1 percent from the field with 35 rebounds. Chattanooga has hit 68 or more points in each of their last seven outings, so they’re scoring well lately.
As for ETSU, they had a couple of spotty games lately but get major credit for the solid win over Georgia. This matchup should be a pretty good one; I think the Mocs can power out a cover, though.
