USC Upstate opened the year with a manageable matchup against Brevard College. The Spartans didn’t have any trouble in that one and cruised to a 90-42 victory. Floyd Rideau, Justin Bailey and Seny Ndiaye each scored 12 points to lead the team.
Matched up against Duke in their second game of the year, USC Upstate was certainly overmatched. The Spartans were down 28-16 by halftime and limped to an 84-38 result. Bailey was the only player on the team in double-figures with 13 points and six boards.
Over on the Clemson side, they opened the season with a matchup versus the Citadel. The Tigers scored 45 points in the first half and held on for an 80-69 win. Chase Hunter led the way on 23 points, while Ian Schieffelin doubled on 20 points and 14 boards.
The Tigers took on South Carolina in their second game. Clemson had a bad first half and a 35-26 deficit. The Tigers eventually lost 60-58 in a tough result. PJ Hall led the team with 15 points, and both Hunter and Brevin Galloway added 13 points apiece.
PICK: I’m probably staying with Clemson but not going near it. The Tigers faced a promising South Carolina team in their last outing and let a bad first half turn into a defeat. Clemson shot 37.7 percent from the field in that one and were out-rebounded 50-32 (19-9 offensive). The Tigers are going to have to sharpen up for this matchup. The good news is that they should overpower USC Upstate if Clemson plays to their capabilities.
