Montana State couldn’t quite break into the top rankings of the Big Sky last year, going 13-10 overall and 8-6 in conference play. That result left the Bobcats in fourth place behind Southern Utah (12-2), Weber State (12-3) and Eastern Washington (12-3).
The Bobcats were sitting at 9-3 in late January, but then hit a five-game losing streak amid a handful of cancellations. The good news is that Montana State put up wins over Idaho State 71-63 and Southern Utah 80-77 (OT) in the Big Sky Tournament, but ultimately fell 65-55 in the Championship Round to Eastern Washington.
Over on the Colorado side, they posted a 23-9 overall record last year and did some damage in a tough Pac-12 with a 14-6 effort. The Buffaloes landed in third place in the conference standings behind Oregon and USC.
The Buffaloes finished the regular season with a four-game win streak, then took out California and USC before falling to Oregon State in the championship of the Pac-12 Tournament. After a national tournament selection, Colorado beat Georgetown 96-73 then fell to Florida State 71-53 in the Second Round.
The Bobcats are 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight road games and 3-9 ATS in their last 12 Tuesday games. Montana State is 2-9-1 ATS in their last 12 overall.
Meanwhile, the Buffaloes are 5-2 ATS in their last seven at home and 0-4 ATS in their last four Tuesday games. The under is 9-4 in Colorado’s last 13 overall.
PICK: Probably going to stick with Colorado here. The Buffaloes are on a roll over the last three seasons, winning 20-plus games in each. The good news is that Colorado is retiring nine players from last year’s team; the bad news is that they’re only returning two starters. That said, the Buffaloes had the best scoring defense (63.8 PPG) and bench scoring (25.3 PPG) in the league last year, so there’s plenty of depth to go around. It may take a few games for Colorado to find their rhythm in 2021-22, but the window of success is still wide open.
