The UC Riverside Highlanders and the Colorado Buffaloes meet Monday in college basketball action from Coors Events Center. UC Riverside is fresh off a 16-12 overall campaign last year that put the team near the middle of the Big West standings. As for Colorado, they posted a 21-12 overall record and a berth in the NIT last season. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
UC Riverside had a pretty mediocre season in 2021-22, going 16-12 overall with a 9-6 run in the Big West Conference. The Highlanders landed in sixth place with that effort, behind Long Beach State, CSU-Fullerton, Hawaii, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara.
The Highlanders had a couple of good runs during the season, but they also had some bad spots as well. Radford finished off the conference slate with a 4-2 run, then fell to Hawaii 68-67 in the first game of the Big West Tournament.
Over on the Colorado side, they took a minor step back from their 2020-21 run (23-9) with a 21-12 overall record. The Buffaloes did pretty well in a talented Pac-12 though, finishing 12-8 and in fourth place behind Arizona, UCLA and USC.
The Buffaloes had one bad 2-6 run in January/February but closed the year strong on a 7-1 stretch. Colorado lost to Arizona in the Pac-12 Tournament, then fell to St. Bonaventure in the first round of the NIT to finish off the year.
The Highlanders are 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall and the over is 8-0 in their last eight overall. Colorado is 5-12-2 ATS in their last 19 at home and the over is 4-0 in their last four overall.
PICK: I’m probably staying with Colorado. The Buffaloes have their work cut out for them in Tad Boyle’s 13th year with the program. Colorado has a pretty tough non-conference schedule ahead, and they’ll be tangling with the likes of Arizona, UCLA and Oregon in the Pac-12 matchups. None of it will be easy, and the Buffaloes are expected to finish several notches down the standings. That said, Colorado does have some winnable games on the schedule, including this opener. I like the Buffaloes to come out of the gate strong and cover here.
