The BYU Cougars and the Creighton Bluejays meet Saturday in college basketball action from Sanford Pentagon. BYU enters this one at 8-1 on the year. The Cougars are fresh off a win over Utah State. BYU got on a nice run to start the year, taking out Cleveland State, San Diego State, Oregon, Central Methodist, Texas Southern and Utah before a loss to Utah Valley. The Cougars bounced back with wins over Montana State and Utah State in the next pair.
In the Utah State matchup, BYU put up 45 points in the first half and 37 more in the second during an 82-71 win. leading scorer Alex Barcello put up 17 points with two rebounds, two assists and two steals in the victory.
Over on the Bluejays’ side, they took out UAPB, Kennesaw State, Nebraska and Brown before a loss to Colorado State. Creighton then beat SIU, SIU-Edwardsville and North Dakota State. The Bluejays lost to Iowa State in their last game.
Creighton kept up with Iowa State well in the first half during their last outing, but were outpaced in the second half 41-35 in a 58-64 defeat. Ryan Hawkins topped the team on 25 points, five rebounds and one block.
Creighton is 2-5 ATS in their last seven neutral-site games and 0-4 ATS in their last four Saturday games. The Bluejays are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
Meanwhile, BYU is 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall and 10-2-1 ATS in their last 13 Saturday games. The over is 4-1 in the Cougars’ last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to try Creighton here. The Bluejays did some good things in the Iowa State matchup despite the loss. Creighton shot 42.2 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Cyclones 34-28 but also coughed up 21 turnovers. Otherwise Creighton’s been scoring pretty well this year, and they’ve hit 70 or more in two of their last three.
As for the Cougars, they didn’t have a whole lot of trouble against Utah State and shot a nice 50 percent with 31 rebounds. I like this one to be a fairly high-scoring game as well, with the Bluejays eking into a cover. Should be an interesting matchup.
