The Marquette Golden Eagles and the Creighton Bluejays meet in college basketball action from Madison Square Garden on Thursday afternoon.

The Marquette Golden Eagles will enter the conference tournament as the #5 seed, finishing the year at 19-11 overall, including an 11-8 mark in Big East conference play this season. Justin Lewis leads the Golden Eagles in scoring and rebounding with 17.1 PPG and 8 RPG while Darryl Morsell has 13.3 PPG as the only other double-digit scorer for Marquette so far this season. Tyler Kolek also leads Marquette in assists with a team-high 5.7 APG as well this season. As a team, Marquette is averaging 74.8 PPG on 45.5% shooting from the field, 34.8% from three and 74.3% from the foul line while allowing 70.8 PPG on 40.8% shooting from the field and 31.5% from three this season.

The Creighton Bluejays will enter the fray as the #4 seed, finishing at 20-10 overall including a 12-7 mark in conference play this season. Ryan Hawkins leads the Bluejays in scoring and rebounding with 14.3 PPG and 7.7 RPG while Ryan Nembhard has 11.3 PPG and a team-high 4.4 APG to lead Creighton in assists. Ryan Kalkbrenner has 12.7 PPG, 7.5 RPG and 2.7 BPG and Alex O’Connell has 11.5 PPG with 5.4 RPG to make up the group of double-digit scorers for Creighton this season. As a team, Creighton is averaging 69 PPG on 45.1% shooting from the field, 31% from three and 72.4% from the foul line while allowing 66.7 PPG on 40% shooting from the field and 32.7% from three this season.

Marquette is 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games against a team with a winning record and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 Thursday games. Creighton is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games following an ATS loss while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 neutral site games.

I get the case to be made for Creighton and the free bucket here as the Bluejays are a very talented group that the Big East will have to watch out for in coming seasons. However, this is the kind of situation that Marquette brought Shaka Smart in for as the man is the maestro of March. Smart just has a way of getting his guys to rally up and I think the Golden Eagles start their postseason with a win and cover here.
