The UMass Minutemen and the Dayton Flyers meet Friday in Atlantic 10 college basketball action from Capital One Arena. UMass is 15-16 overall this year. The Minutemen beat George Washington in tournament activity Thursday. As for Dayton, they’re 22-9 overall this season and coming off a win over Davidson. UMass has had a few good stretches this season, but overall the team has struggled with getting back to .500 in the record column. The good news is that the Minutemen have won three straight games versus Fordham, George Mason and George Washington.
In the Thursday tournament matchup versus George Washington, the Minutemen posted a 56-36 advantage by halftime. UMass was outscored 43-52 from there but came away with a 99-88 win. Leading scorer Noah Fernandes posted 29 points with seven assists.
Over on the Dayton side, they started out the year at just 1-3 but the team hasn’t lost consecutive games since then. The Flyers last fell to La Salle on February 26; since then they’ve taken out Richmond and Davidson in the last pair.
On Saturday versos Davidson, the Flyers trailed by one point going into the break. Dayton hit a 48-41 second-half run during a comeback 82-76 victory. DaRon Holmes posted 20 points with six rebounds to lead the team in the win.
PICK: I’m going to stay with Dayton. The Flyers have had some close calls over the last three games, but overall they’ve done quite well over this 7-1 stretch. Dayton has hit 74 or more points in three of the last five games, and they won handily the last time these teams met up.
Speaking of UMass, they’ve improved sharply over the last four games, scoring 73 or more points in each. I think the Minutemen will give the Flyers a run for their proverbial money initially, but Dayton probably still has the inside track on a cover.
