The UMass Lowell River Hawks and the Dayton Flyers meet Saturday in college basketball action from Mohegan Sun Arena. The River Hawks posted a big win over Rivier this week to kick off the season at 1-0. As for the Flyers, they were able to beat UIC by 10 points for their first win. UMass Lowell put up an 11-12 season in 2020-21, going 7-8 in America East games. The River Hawks finished around the middle of the pack in the standings. UMass Lowell beat Stony Brook, New Hampshire and UMBC in the conference tourney before falling to Hartford.
UMass Lowell did a good job against Rivier in their opener, surging to a 49-23 halftime edge and a 91-55 victory. The River Hawks’ leading scorer was Everette Hammond with 18 points, four rebounds and three steals. Justin Faison added 12 points and five assists.
Over on the Dayton side, they went 14-10 overall last year with a 9-7 mark in the A-10. The Flyers beat Rhode Island in the conference tournament before falling to VCU. After an invite to the NIT, Dayton lost to Memphis 71-60 in the first round to end the season.
Dayton got a nice win over UIC on Tuesday 64-54, despite falling behind 32-25 at halftime. Toumani Camara was the top producer for the Flyers in that one, with 15 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Kobe Elvis chipped in 10 points and seven boards as well.
Dayton is 7-1 ATS in their last eight after an ATS loss and 6-2 ATS in their last eight at home. The Flyers are 5-1 ATS in their last six as a home favorite.
Meanwhile, the River Hawks are 5-11 ATS in the last 16 Saturday games and the over is 5-2 in their last seven road games. The under is 4-1 in UMass Lowell’s last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on UMass Lowell. The River Hawks had a cupcake matchup in their opener, but they took care of business. UMass Lowell shot 50 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range, collecting 48 rebounds and 13 team assists along the way.
As for Dayton, they had a messy first half against UIC but were able to rebound and bag the win. The Flyers had some well-rounded scoring contributions but only two players were in double-figures. This should be an interesting matchup overall, and I think the River Hawks can get in there.
