The Jackson State Tigers and the Drake Bulldogs meet Thursday in college basketball action from Knapp Center. Jackson State is 2-6 so far this year. The Tigers lost to Northern Iowa in their last game. As for Drake, they’re 6-4 on the season and coming off a loss to Clemson. Jackson State started out the year at 0-5 before finally bagging their first win over Louisiana. Since then it’s been a 1-3 run for the Tigers with a win over Illinois State mixed with losses to Marquette, Iowa State and Northern Iowa.
In the Northern Iowa game, the Tigers had a 32-25 lead at halftime. Jackson State was outscored 41-24 from there in a 66-56 loss. Both Ken Evans and Gabe Watson scored 12 points apiece, and Jayveous McKinnis put up 10 points with 14 boards.
Over on the Drake side, they started out the season with three wins, then lost to Belmont, Alabama and North Texas. After wins over Valparaiso, St. Thomas MN and Omaha the Bulldogs lost again to Clemson.
In the Clemson matchup, the Bulldogs fought back from a 39-32 first-half deficit and forced overtime. Drake was outscored 16-6 in the extra period for a 90-80 loss. Tucker DeVries led the team on 19 points, and ShanQuan Hemphill had 15 points with eight boards.
The Bulldogs are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games and 45-22-3 ATS in their last 70 at home. Drake is 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 overall.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 7-2 ATS in their last nine Thursday games and 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine after a straight-up loss. Jackson State is 4-1 ATS in their last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Drake. The Bulldogs put up a great second half against Clemson and nearly pulled off a big win. Drake shot 46.7 percent in that one with 27 rebounds and 15 team assists. Over their last four games, the Bulldogs have 73 or more points in each.
As for Jackson State, they’ve struggled in their last four and haven’t scored more than 61 points during that stretch. If Drake can put up a decent offensive outing here the cover should be no issue.
