The Richmond Spiders and the Drake Bulldogs meet Saturday in college basketball action from Knapp Center. Richmond is 2-1 on the young season so far. The Spiders took out Georgia State in their last game. As for Drake, they’re 2-0 after their first pair and fresh off a win over South Dakota. Richmond managed a win over NC Central in their opener. Despite trailing 36-31 at halftime the Spiders surged from there in an eventual 70-60 win. In game two it was a matchup against Utah State. Richmond had an early lead and couldn’t hang on in an 85-74 loss.
The Spiders got back into the win column in game three against Georgia State. The Spiders jumped out to a 49-36 edge at the break and were able to keep it going this time in a 84-78 win. Tyler Burton led the team with his 20 points and eight rebounds.
Over on the Drake side, they didn’t have a lot of trouble in their opener against Coe College. The Bulldogs scored 47 points in the first half on the way to an 87-61 win. Tucker DeVries and Tremell Murphy each scored 14 points with a combined 14 rebounds.
In game two, the Bulldogs kept it going with another victory. This time Drake took on South Dakota, scoring 59 second-half points in a 99-50 win. ShanQuan Hemphill led the team on 14 points with five rebounds in 21 minutes of work.
The Bulldogs are 45-16-3 ATS in their last 64 home games and 16-5 ATS in their last 21 after an ATS win. Drake is 21-8-1 ATS in the last 30 overall.
Meanwhile, the Spiders are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven road games and the under is 7-2 in their last nine overall. The under is 4-0 in Richmond’s last four road games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Richmond. The Spiders have been scoring pretty well so far over their first three games, with 70 or more points in each. The only real blemish was against Utah State, and Richmond just had the one bad half (48-31) there during the loss.
As for Drake, they cruised in their last game and got a nice team-wide effort with lots of different contributions. I like the Bulldogs to make this an interesting matchup; should be a fun one to watch.
