Wofford opened up their year with a favorable matchup versus Bob Jones University. The Terriers surged to a 64-19 half-time lead and scored 56 more points from there in a 120-48 blowout. Kyler Filewich led the team on a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards.
Game two didn’t go as well for the Terriers. Wofford played High Point and mustered just 22 first-half points. The Terriers would eventually limp to a 91-80 loss. BJ Mack topped the team on 21 points and four rebounds.
Over on the Drake side, they had some successes last season. The Bulldogs finished 25-11 overall with a 13-5 record in Missouri Valley Conference play. That left Drake in third place behind Northern Iowa and Missouri State. The team would eventually lose in the quarterfinals of the CBI.
In their first action of the 2022-23 season versus IUPUI, the Bulldogs posted a strong effort. Drake had 40 points in each half on the way to a solid 80-48 win. Tucker DeVries led the team with his 22 points and eight rebounds.
PICK: I’m likely going to stay with Drake. Probably not touching this one though; we’ve only got one game from the Bulldogs to draw conclusions from. That said, Drake did a pretty solid job in their opener against IUPUI, shooting 54 percent from the floor with 42 rebounds and 10 assists. As for Wofford, they had a pretty limp showing against High Point—especially in the first half. If the Terriers rally here they should be able to provide a good matchup, but I still think Drake will cover.
