The Western Carolina Catamounts and the East Carolina Pirates meet Sunday in college basketball action from Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. Western Carolina is 1-1 so far this year, beating Bowling Green in OT before a 12-point loss to Wake Forest. As for East Carolina, they’ve got two wins in their first pair: one versus SC State and the other against Canisius. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Western Carolina had a comfortable 37-29 lead on Bowling Green at halftime in their opener, but the Falcons were able to fight back and force overtime. The Catamounts eventually prevailed 79-71. Leading scorer Nicholas Robinson put up 15 points with 13 rebounds.
In game two versus Wake Forest, the Catamounts gave up 49 second-half points in an 87-75 defeat. Travion McCray was the top scorer for Western Carolina in that one, providing 21 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Over on the Pirates’ side, they were able to fend off South Carolina State in their opener with a 70-62 win. JJ Miles led the team in scoring with 18 points, and both Vance Jackson (12 points; 13 boards) and Brandon Johnson (11 points; 13 rebounds) posted double-doubles.
In game two against Canisius. East Carolina caught fire in the first half on the way to a 47-26 advantage and won the game 83-71. Tristen Newton and Brandon Suggs each scored 14 points, combining for seven assists and eight rebounds (mostly from Newton).
The Pirates are 1-4 ATS in their last five at home and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Sunday games. ECU is 1-5 ATS in their last six overall as well.
Meanwhile, the Catamounts are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 overall and 2-7 ATS in their last nine road games. Western Carolina is 2-6 ATS in their last eight after an ATS win.
PICK: I’m going to stay with East Carolina. The Pirates have put up a couple of impressive wins so far, and they’e not having difficulties scoring. ECU shot 46.7 percent from the field and 90.9 from the line (20-of-22) in their latest win, out-rebounding the Griffins 45-34 along the way.
As for Western Carolina, they shot 45.6 percent from the field against Wake but couldn’t slow the Deacons down on the scoreboard. I like this one to be a reasonably high-scoring matchup with East Carolina eventually powering out a cover. Should be a fun matchup regardless.
