Florida Gulf Coast opened the year on a 9-3 run through 12 games, losing to only San Diego, Tennessee and Florida Atlantic. The Eagles are 4-1 in their last five with wins over Canisius, Jacksonville, Central Arkansas and North Florida.
Matched up against the Ospreys on Saturday, the Eagles took a 47-23 lead into the break. Florida Gulf Coast hit a 35-34 advantage from there and won it 82-57. Andre Weir led the way on a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Over on the Eastern Kentucky side, they were 6-6 through 12 games with losses to Western Kentucky, Cincinnati, Texas A&M-Commerce, James Madison, Tennessee and Northern Kentucky. The Colonels are 4-1 since then with a lone loss to Kennesaw state.
Eastern Kentucky nursed a 30-29 halftime lead in their matchup versus Liberty on Sunday. The Colonels hit a 32-30 advantage in the second and took the win 62-59. Devontae Blanton was tops with 16 points and eight rebounds.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles are looking pretty good during this 6-1 stretch. Florida Gulf Coast has scored 67 or more points in all six wins during that time, including 82 or more in their last pair of victories. As for Eastern Kentucky, they’ve hit 67 or more points in five of their last six outings, going 5-1 in that stretch. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a fairly high-scoring affair here, but I like FGCU a little better cover-wise. Should be a fun game to watch, though.
