The Akron Zips and the Eastern Michigan Eagles meet Tuesday in college basketball action from EMU Convocation Center. Akron is 17-8 so far this season and coming off a loss to Ohio on Friday. As for Eastern Michigan, they’re 6-19 following a loss to Toledo on Saturday. Check back all season long for free college basketball picks at Sports Chat Place.
Akron opened up the year on a pretty solid 12-6 run across their first 18 games. The Zips are 5-2 since then with wins over Western Michigan, Miami-OH, Buffalo, Ohio and Kent State before losses to Toledo and Ohio.
On Friday versus Ohio, the Zips were down 44-40 going into the second half. Akron didn’t get any closer on a 46-41 deficit from there and lost 90-81. Xavier Castaneda topped the team on 34 points and Enrique Freeman doubled on 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Eastern Michigan Eagles
Over on the Eastern Michigan side, they struggled in the early-going this year on a 4-14 start. The Eagles haven’t gotten much better on a 2-5 run with losses to Toledo, Northern Illinois, Ball State, Buffalo and Toledo again during that time.
In the Toledo rematch on Saturday, Eastern Michigan was down 34-31 going into the second half. The Eagles were outscored 36-32 from there and lost 70-63. Tyson Acuff was the top team scorer on 36 points in 36 minutes.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m probably going to stick with Eastern Michigan in this one. The Eagles’ recent record doesn’t look so good, however they’ve been competitive lately. Eastern Michigan’s last four losses have each come by seven points or fewer, so with a little luck the Eagles can probably stay competitive here. As for Akron, they won easily the last time these teams met up, 104-67 in a January 13 matchup at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Eagles are going to have to play a complete game to avoid a repeat performance, but I like them enough to try EMU on a cover.
