The Hofstra Pride and the Elon Phoenix meet Friday in college basketball action from Schar Center. Hofstra enters this one at 8-6 so far. The Pride are coming off a close loss to William & Mary. Hofstra posted a 5-5 run over their first 10 games, taking out Duquesne, Molloy, Detroit, Princeton and Bucknell along the way. After three wins over John Jay, Arkansas and Monmouth the Pride lost to William & Mary in their last game.
Matched up against William & Mary on Wednesday, the Pride were down 30-26 at halftime and couldn’t pull off the comeback despite a second-half surge in a 63-62 heartbreaker. Aaron Estrada led the team with 21 points and six rebounds.
Over on the Elon side, they posted a 2-8 clip over their first 10 games this year. The Phoenix’s only wins were over Randolph and Bluefield early in the year. Elon is 2-2 since then with wins over Winthrop and Northeastern.
In the Northeastern matchup on Wednesday, Elon jumped out to a nice 46-24 lead at the break and held on for the 79-62 win. Darius Burford topped the team on 23 points, and Hunter McIntosh added 20 points with five boards.
Elon is 2-5 ATS in their last seven Friday games and 7-2 ATS in their last nine after an ATS win. The Phoenix are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 overall.
Meanwhile, the Pride are 35-17-1 ATS in the last 53 road games and 4-1 ATS in the last five Friday games. Hofstra is 5-2 ATS in their last seven overall.
PICK: I’m probably going to take Hofstra here. The Pride need a bounce-back effort from their last outing, though. Hofstra had trouble keeping up with a not-so-good William & Mary team in that one, and only got double-digit scoring from two different players. The Pride had been scoring fairly well for an extended period leading up to that game however, so I like them to come back sharper here. As for Elon, they’ve faced some tough teams lately with spotty results, but I think they’ll hang around for most of the game before Hofstra ekes out a cover.
