Winthrop won their first two games this year, then hit a losing streak to Middle Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Washington State. Since then the Eagles are 4-1 with wins over Washington, Hartford, Furman and Carver.
In the Carver game, the Eagles got off to a 44-31 lead at the break and cruised to the 83-52 win. Leading scorer Josh Corbin put up 19 points and four boards, while Kelton Talford added a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Over on the Elon side, they managed wins in two of their first three over Randolph and Bluefield. After that came a losing streak to West Virginia, Ole Miss, Temple, Jacksonville State, UNC Greensboro, High Point and North Carolina.
In the North Carolina game, the Phoenix posted 29 points in the first half and 34 more in the second on the way to an 80-63 defeat. Hunter McIntosh was the top team scorer with 16 points and two rebounds.
The Phoenix are 0-4 ATS in their last four at home and 6-1 ATS in their last seven after an ATS win. Elon is 1-6 ATS in their last seven overall.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games and 0-5 ATS in their last five after a straight-up win. The over is 4-1 in Winthrop’s last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to stick with Winthrop. The Eagles have been scoring pretty well over their last six games, with 82 or more points in five of those outings (and a 4-2 record). Winthrop has had a handful of dud games here and there, but overall the team is showing potential.
As for Elon, they can’t get it together over this losing streak. The Phoenix have given up 72 or more points in all but one game this year, and 80 or more in three of their last four. There should be plenty of opportunity for Winthrop to score here.
