The Canisius Golden Griffins and the Fairfield Stags meet Monday in college basketball action from Webster Bank Arena. Canisius is 8-17 on the year so far. The Griffins lost to Marist in their last game. As for Fairfield, they’re 11-13 this season and fresh off a win over Niagara. Canisius managed a 5-9 run over their first 14 games this year and they’ve won consecutive outings just once since then. The Griffins are 1-5 in their last six, falling to Monmouth, Rider, Siena, Iona and Marist during that time.
In the Marist game on Saturday, the Griffins had a 32-29 edge by halftime but lost it on a 38-42 deficit in the second. The result was a 71-70 defeat. Leading scorer Jordan Henderson came up with 19 points and five rebounds in the loss.
Over on the Fairfield side, their year began at 8-3 but the team then hit a seven-game losing streak in December/January. The Stags are 3-3 since then with losses to Monmouth, Siena and Quinnipiac mixed with wins over Marist, Rider and Niagara.
Matched up against Niagara on Saturday, the Stags posted a 32-20 run in the first half and a 41-33 advantage from there in a 73-53 blowout win. Tops in scoring was Jesus Cruz with his 14 points, six rebounds and two assists.
The Stags are 2-5 ATS in their last seven at home and 11-5 ATS in their last 16 after an ATS win. The under is 3-0-1 in Fairfield’s last four at home.
Meanwhile, the Griffins are 2-6 ATS in their last eight Monday games and 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 road games. Canisius is 5-2 ATS in the last seven overall.
PICK: I’m going to try Fairfield, but probably staying away from this one. Neither one of these teams has been playing all that well lately. That said, the Stags managed a nice win over Niagara in their last game, and they’ve hit 69 or more points in each of their last three victories. Canisius has been at 70 or more points in each of their last two games, but it’s anyone’s guess how either team will score here. I like Fairfield a little better cover-wise; it’s probably not one to mess with, though.
