Manhattan opened up the season with a matchup versus VCU. The Jaspers started slow with a 48-30 first-half deficit and eventually fell 73-56. Elijah Buchanan led the team on 16 points, four assists and six rebounds. Josh Roberts added 14 points and eight boards.
Originally, Manhattan had a second game scheduled Saturday versus Central Connecticut. That game was postponed however, due to unplayable court conditions and safety concerns. The matchup will be played at a later date that wasn’t initially announced.
Over on the Fairleigh Dickinson side, they opened up the season with a game versus Loyola. The Knights fought back from a halftime deficit to force overtime but eventually lost 88-82. Demetre Roberts scored 22 points, and Heru Bligen doubled on 21 points and 11 rebounds.
In game two, the Knights had a much more manageable matchup versus Mercy. Fairleigh Dickinson scored 52 points in the first half and 54 more in the second for a 106-66 blowout. Roberts led the team again on 22 points and six assists.
PICK: I’m likely going to stay with Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights took a tough-luck loss to Loyola in their first outing but didn’t play too badly. Fairleigh Dickinson shot 40 percent from the field with 45 rebounds, but only had 11 assists (to Loyola’s 21) and hit a tepid 7-of-28 (25 percent) from 3-point range. As for Manhattan, they fell behind quickly to VCU in their lone game this year. Fairleigh Dickinson needs to get off to a good start but I think they can cover.
