Charlotte managed a 9-5 run in their first 14 games, losing to Toledo, Drexel, Davidson, Arkansas and Wake Forest. Since then it’s been a 3-4 run with victories versus Rice, Old Dominion and Marshall in that stretch.
Matched up against Marshall on Saturday, the 49ers managed 40 points in the first half and 48 in the second on the way to a nice 88-64 win. Jahmir Young topped the scoring on 24 points and seven rebounds. Aly Khalifa doubled with 16 points and 10 assists.
Over on the FIU side, they went 10-7 to start the year. The losses in that time were to Georgia, Eastern Michigan, Jacksonville State, Old Dominion, Western Kentucky, UAB and MTSU. It’s been a 3-3 stretch since with losses to UTSA, UTEP and LA Tech.
In the Louisiana Tech game on Saturday, the Panthers were down 30-25 at halftime. FIU posted 57 points in the second half but fell short 86-82. Eric Lovett was the top team scorer with 25 points, one rebound and two assists.
The Panthers are 9-2-3 ATS in their last 14 Monday games and 4-15 ATS in their last 19 after a straight-up loss. FIU is 4-0 ATS in their last four at home.
Meanwhile, the 49ers are 26-56 ATS in their last 82 road games and 6-2 ATS in their last eight Monday games. The over is 10-3 in Charlotte’s last 13 after a straight-up win.
PICK: I’m going to try FIU here. This one’s tough though; both teams are struggling right now. In any case, the Panthers have been scoring well lately despite the 3-3 run. They’ve hit 68 or more points in five of those six games. Charlotte has a couple of duds in their last trio, but the 88 points over the weekend against Marshall was a nice bounce-back. All things considered I think this one will be competitive, and I think FIU has the inside track on a cover/win.
