Old Dominion went 2-4 over their first six games, taking out VA Wesleyan and Manhattan along the way. A 3-1 stretch came afterward, then the Monarchs hit a three-game losing streak to VCU, Richmond and Charleston.
In the Charleston game back on December 22, the Monarchs were outscored 41-39 in the first half. ODU kept pace from there but still lost 82-80. Top scorer CJ Keyser put up 26 points with two rebounds and two assists in the defeat.
Over on the FIU side, they lost their opener before hitting a win streak versus Trinity FL, Ball State, Green Bay, UNC Greensboro, North Dakota, North Florida, FGCU and Stetson. Since then it’s been losses to Eastern Michigan and Jacksonville State.
In the Jacksonville State game, the Panthers were outscored 36-30 in the second half on the way to a 66-59 defeat. Tevin Brewer led Florida International with 13 points,, five assists and six rebounds in 32 minutes of work.
FIU is 4-1 ATS in their last five at home and 7-16-1 ATS in their last 24 overall. The under is 4-1 in the Panthers’ last five Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Monarchs are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and 10-27 ATS in their last 37 Thursday games. The under is 5-1 in ODU’s last six road games.
PICK: I’m probably going to try FIU here, but realistically staying away. The Panthers are coming off a lousy offensive game against Jacksonville State, shooting a meager 36.8 percent from the field with 14 turnovers. FIU is generally a much better scoring team than that, and they’ve got a good opportunity to prove that here.
As for ODU, they’ve hit 66 points or fewer in eight of their last 10 games but they’re coming off a decent outing versus Charleston—despite the loss. All things considered I think FIU can keep the Monarchs at bay in this one. Should be a great game.
