UNCG had a nice run over their first four games, bagging wins in each outing. The Spartans took out NC A&T 57-53 in the opener, then beat Northern Kentucky 70-69, Coppin State 55-48 and Green Bay 60-58 to move to 4-0.
The Spartans’ luck ran out in their last game versus UMass. UNC Greensboro stayed right with the Minutemen the whole time but suffered a 15-12 overtime deficit for a 93-90 loss. Kaleb Hunter put up 18 points with three rebounds and a steal to lead the way.
Over on the FIU side, their first game of the year was against Georgia and turned into a 58-51 loss. The Panthers got it going in their next game against Trinity FL with a 111-48 win, then beat Ball State 73-60 in game three.
The Panthers matched up against Green Bay on Friday during their fourth game of the year. FIU was down 31-27 at the break but surged from there for a 63-60 win. Lead scorer Tevin Brewer had 16 points with five assists and six rebounds.
FIU is 7-1 ATS in their last eight Sunday games and 2-10 ATS in their last 12 after an ATS loss. FIU is 5-15-1 ATS in their last 21 overall.
Meanwhile, the Spartans are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 Sunday games and 5-1 ATS in their last six after a straight-up loss. UNCG is 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral-site games.
PICK: I’m going to stick with FIU, but probably staying away. This one could realistically go either way. The Panthers need to play better here than they did on Friday, though. FIU shot a tepid 36.0 percent with just 3-of-20 (15 percent) from 3-point range in a defense-heavy game against Green Bay. By comparison, UNC Greensboro shot 54.2 percent from the field in their last game and collected 43 rebounds to UMass’ 21 (but still lost thanks to 17 Minutemen 3-pointers). I like this one to be competitive and high scoring; should be fun to watch.
