The Stony Brook Seawolves and the Florida Gators meet Wednesday in college basketball action from O’Connell Center. Stony Brook is 7-4 on the year and coming off a win over Saint Peter’s. Stony Brook managed a 4-4 run over their first eight games this year, losing to George Mason, Kansas, Fairfield and Wagner along the way. The Seawolves have since been on a three-game win streak, taking out Bryant Central CT State and Saint Peter’s.
Back on Saturday versus Saint Peter’s, the Seawolves were down 34-27 at the break. Stony Brook surged on a 37-29 run from there in a comeback win 64-63. Top scorer Jahlil Jenkins put up 15 points, and Tykei Greene added 12 points with nine boards.
Over on the Gators’ side, they began the year with wins over Elon, Florida State, Milwaukee, California, Ohio State and Troy. Florida has gone 2-3 since then, losing to Oklahoma, TX Southern and Maryland with wins over North Florida and South Florida.
Matched up against South Florida back on Saturday, the Gators posted a 30-18 edge in the first half and eventually pull off a 66-55 win. Colin Castleton doubled up on 12 points and 11 boards, and Phlandrous Fleming added 12 points in 25 minutes.
The Gators are 6-2 ATS in the last eight at home and 1-4 ATS in their last five as a favorite. Florida is 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
Meanwhile, the Seawolves are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven as an underdog. Stony Brook is 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall.
PICK: I’m probably going to stick with Florida. The Gators didn’t shoot especially well versus South Florida, with just 39 percent from the field and 30.8 from 3-point range. Florida overcame their tepid shooting with a 45-27 rebounding advantage to pull off the victory. The Gators have had a couple of rough losses over their last four games, but they should be in complete control here. Stony Brook can score well when the matchup is right, but I don’t think they’ll keep pace in this one.
