The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Furman Paladins meet Friday in college basketball action from Timmons Arena. App State is 5-4 so far this year. The Mountaineers are coming off a win over Boyce College. As for the Paladins, they’re 6-3 on the season and lost to Winthrop in their last game. Appalachian State went just 2-3 over their first five games, tallying losses to Iona, Charlotte and Delaware. Since then it’s been a 3-1 run for the Mountaineers. They’ve taken out Akron, Hartford and Boyce College in that stretch.

Appalachian State didn’t have much trouble versus Boyce College in their last game. The Mountaineers jumped out to a huge 46-10 edge at halftime and cruised to a dominant 90-29 finish. Chris Mantis and CJ Huntley each scored 10 points in the win.

Over on the Furman side, they started the season 3-2 with wins over North Greenville, Louisville and Radford. The Paladins then beat SC Upstate, High Point and Charleston before a loss to Winthrop on Tuesday.

In the Tuesday loss, the Paladins gave up 43 points in the first half and 42 more from there in an 85-80 loss. Leading scorer Alex Hunter finished with 24 points, three rebounds and one assist. Jalen Slawson tripled up on 15 points, 10 boards and 12 assists.

Furman is 1-5 ATS in their last six at home and 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 overall. The over is 10-1 in the Paladins’ last 11 overall.
Meanwhile, the Mountaineers are 2-7 ATS in their last nine as a favorite and 5-2 ATS in the last seven as an underdog. The over is 5-2 in App State’s last seven Friday games.

PICK: I’m going to try Furman here. The Paladins had trouble keeping up with Winthrop offensively in their last game, but ended up with some decent stats. Furman shot 46.7 percent from the floor with 15-of-36 (41.7 percent) from 3-point range, 28 rebounds and 18 assists. Furman has hit 74 or more points in each of their last four games.

As for App State, they haven’t exactly been dominant on the scoreboard this year. The Mountaineers have scored fewer than 70 points in seven of nine outings so far. If Furman can get their offense moving early in this one I think they’ll be okay on a cover.
