South Carolina State got off to a rough start this year with seven straight losses right out of the gate. Those defeats came courtesy of South Carolina, Tennessee State, Duquesne, Kentucky, North Florida, Wake Forest and Western Kentucky.
The Bulldogs managed their first win on Tuesday versus East Carolina. South Carolina State got off to a 39-35 edge at the break and held strong for a 73-68 victory. Tops in scoring was Lesown Hallums with 22 points and six boards.
Over on the Furman side, they went 2-2 over their first four games with wins versus North Greenville and Belmont before losses to Penn State and Old Dominion. The Paladins beat South Carolina and Tusculum in their next pair.
Back on Tuesday versus Appalachian State, the Paladins kept their run going. Furman was up 32-19 going into the second half and managed to hang on for a 65-61 win despite getting outscored 42-33 after halftime. Jalen Slawson doubled on 16 points and 12 boards in the win.
PICK: I’m probably going to stay with Furman. Not touching it, though; the line is pretty thick. The Paladins had a great first half against Appalachian State in their last game and were able to hang on for their fifth win of the year. Furman has put up pretty solid offensive performances this year; they’ve hit 68 or more points in six of seven games so far. As for SC State, they can breathe a bit after their first win Tuesday. The Bulldogs have been giving up a lot of points this year in general however, so I don’t see them covering if Furman is on point.
