Gardner-Webb vs Winthrop 2/16/22 College Basketball Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Winthrop Eagles and the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Paul Porter Arena. Winthrop is 17-8 so far this year and coming off a win over Presbyterian. As for Gardner-Webb, they’re sitting at 15-10 on the season. The Bulldogs beat Charleston Southern in their last appearance. Winthrop posted a sketchy 6-6 run to start the year, but the team has been steady since then. The Eagles last lost to Longwood to close out January, and since then they’ve beaten North Carolina A&T, Hampton, Radford and Presbyterian. 

In the Presbyterian game on Saturday, the Eagles posted a 28-24 edge in the first half. Winthrop was able to keep the pace and won 65-61. Cory Hightower and DJ Burns each notched 17 points, combining for seven boards. 

Over on the Gardner-Webb side, they managed a similarly rough 4-7 start this year but have only lost three games since. The Bulldogs are on a six-game win streak over UNC Asheville, Radford, High Point, NC A&T, Campbell and Charleston Southern. 

Matched up against Charleston Southern on Saturday, the Bulldogs posted 41 points in each half en route to a dominant 82-65 victory. Lance Terry was the team’s top scorer on 24 points, and D’Maurian Williams added 21 points of his own. 

The Bulldogs are 6-1 ATS in their last seven overall and 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games. Gardner-Webb is 4-1 ATS in their last five after an ATS win. 

Meanwhile, the Eagles are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 road games and 1-5 ATS in their last six Wednesday games. Winthrop is 4-10 ATS in their last 14 overall. 

PICK: I’m going to try Gardner-Webb here. The Bulldogs are playing well over this six-game win streak, especially on defense. Gardner-Webb has given up 65 or fewer points in all six games, but they’ve passed 69 points just once themselves. 

Winthrop took a home win 64-62 the last time these teams met up, so this one figures to be a pretty tight affair as well. I like Gardner-Webb to get some revenge at home and pull off a cover.
