Saint Joseph’s got off to a pretty solid 7-5 run over their first 12 games this year. It’s been a bumpy 1-4 ride since then, though. The Hawks have taken out George Washington alongside losses to Davidson, Rhode Island, La Salle and VCU during that stretch.
In Saturday’s matchup versus VCU, Saint Joseph’s posted just 25 points in the first half and 29 more in the second during a 70-54 loss. Leading scorer Taylor Funk put up 22 points with six rebounds and an 11-for-11 mark at the line.
Over on the George Mason side, their year began with a four-game win streak, a five-game losing streak and a three-game win streak. After losses to Kansas and George Washington, the Patriots managed a tight win over Dayton in their last game.
Matched up against Dayton on Saturday, the Patriots posted a 25-24 edge in the first half and were able to hang on for the 50-49 win. D’Shawn Schwartz was the top scorer with 17 points and six rebounds. Josh Oduro doubled on 14 points and 10 boards.
The Patriots are 8-1 ATS in their last nine at home and 6-19-2 ATS in their last 27 Monday games. George Mason is 5-1 ATS in the last six overall.
Meanwhile, the Hawks are 1-4 ATS in their last five Monday games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven after a straight-up loss. Saint Joseph’s is 1-4 ATS in their last five overall.
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Saint Joseph’s. Probably not going near this one, though. A lot of different scenarios could play out. The Patriots haven’t been scoring all that well lately with 64 or fewer points in three of their last four. That said, George Mason does have some pretty solid scoring outings this year in comparable matchups. As for St. Joseph’s, they’re coming off a nice (if low-scoring) win over Dayton and have hit 67 or more points in five of their last six. It may not be pretty but I think the Hawks can get it done here.
